EPS Cutting Machine Accuracy & Tolerances: What to Expect

What tolerance can you realistically hold?

On a properly set-up EPS Cutting Machine, a hot-wire contour cut holds about +/-0.5 mm on straight and gently curved runs. A CNC router improves this to roughly +/-0.2 mm on three-dimensional parts. These are workshop-real numbers, not catalogue best cases.

What actually drives the tolerance

  • Wire tension and straightness. A slack or sagging wire bows the cut. Keep the wire taut and replace it when it stretches.
  • Feed speed. Too fast and the wire lags the program; slow, steady feed is the single biggest accuracy lever.
  • Bead density. Very low-density foam can compress under the fixture and spring back after cutting — see our density and cutting-speed guide.
  • Workpiece fixing. A block that shifts by a millimetre destroys the tolerance. Use locating pins or a vacuum table.

How to hold +/-0.5 mm in production

Prototype the first part, measure it against the template, then lock the feed program and wire tension for the batch. For architectural or mould work where +/-0.2 mm matters, step up to an EPS CNC cutting machine rather than pushing a hot wire past its limit.

The takeaway: an EPS Cutting Machine is accurate enough for almost all shape and packaging work once the wire, feed and fixture are controlled — accuracy is mostly setup discipline, not hardware luck.
