EPS Cutting Machine Dust & Fume Control (Beyond the Fire Extinguisher)
Two by-products you must control
A EPS Cutting Machine produces two things besides cut parts: light foam dust (mainly from CNC routing) and fumes (from the hot wire melting bead strands). Both need control — our fire-extinguisher FAQ covers ignition; this is about everyday air quality and visibility.
Dust control on CNC routing
- Local extraction. A hood over the spindle or oscillating blade pulls dust at the source. Even a shop vacuum on a branch works for low volume.
- Static control. EPS dust is light and static-clingy; grounded ducting stops it coating the machine.
- Routine wipe-down. Don’t let dust build on rails and lead screws — it wears the guides.
Fume control on hot-wire cutting
The hot wire releases styrene vapour. Keep the cutting area in a ventilated space with general extraction; avoid cutting in a sealed room. A modest extraction arm over the wire table is enough for typical batch work.
Why it matters for accuracy too
Dust on the blade path hides the cut line and degrades edge quality. Good extraction is not just safety — it is part of holding the tolerance in our accuracy and tolerances FAQ. A clean EPS Cutting Machine cuts cleaner.
