Why oscillation cut is important for EPS Cutting Line?

EPS cutting line for shaping large EPS blocks

On a continuous EPS cutting line, the cutting wire does not simply pass through the block. It oscillates: the wire vibrates at high frequency with a stroke of about 50 mm, and the vibration speed is controlled by a frequency converter. This is known as oscillation cutting, and it is one of the reasons a modern cutting line outperforms a simple static-wire frame.

What oscillation actually does to the cut

A stationary hot wire has to push its full length through the foam, and the molten material clings to the wire the whole way. An oscillating wire only contacts the material for part of each stroke, so the average cutting resistance drops sharply. The practical consequences are:

  • Lower cutting force — the wire is no longer under continuous load, which reduces breakage and extends wire service life
  • Higher cutting speed — less resistance means the block can be fed faster without overheating the wire
  • Cleaner cut surface — the vibration clears molten residue from the kerf, leaving a smoother face
  • Better performance on wet blocks — freshly moulded blocks with higher water content cut poorly with a static wire; oscillation is where the difference shows most

Why wet blocks matter

This is the point most buyers miss. A block that has not fully cured or dried carries moisture, and moisture absorbs heat at the cut face. A static wire then needs more current to maintain temperature, which risks burning the surface or snapping the wire. Oscillation keeps the wire moving through the material, so the heat is applied more evenly and the line keeps its speed even on green blocks.

Adjusting it in practice

The stroke is fixed by the machine design, but the vibration frequency is set from the control panel. Higher frequency suits thin sheets and dense material; lower frequency suits thick blocks where a slower stroke keeps the kerf clean. Operators usually settle on two or three saved settings for the thicknesses they run most.

Where it fits in the line

Oscillation is standard on our horizontal and vertical cutting units, and is paired with automatic wire setting so that both wire position and wire motion are set from the same screen. For shaped and profiled work, an EPS CNC cutting machine takes the principle further with programmed tool paths.
