EPS Silo System: Bead Storage & Ageing That Keeps Your Line Running

EPS silo system for expanded bead storage and ageing

Why a silo sits between pre-expander and moulder

An EPS silo system is the buffer that lets your EPS pre-expander machine run in steady batches while your block molding machine draws aged bead on demand. Without it, every pre-expander stop — a steam hiccup, a changeover — immediately starves the moulders. With it, the two processes are decoupled and the whole plant becomes resilient.

Ageing is the real job

Pre-expanded bead must rest so internal pressure equalises before moulding; skip ageing and you get post-mould shrinkage and surface defects in the block. The silo is where that rest happens. A correctly sized silo holds at least one full shift of pre-expanded bead, so a brief pre-expander stop does not stop moulding, and the bead ages properly in the meantime.

What to size for

  • Volume. Match the silo to your peak moulder bead demand per shift, not per hour. A busy plant wants a buffer of many hours, not minutes.
  • Flow. Bead must move without bridging or compaction. Conical bottoms and gentle air conveyance keep it flowing.
  • Segregation. If you run several densities, separate silos or compartments stop grades mixing.

Common mistakes

  • Silo too small. The buffer vanishes during any stop and the line stalls exactly when you can least afford it.
  • No ageing time built in. A silo used only as a pass-through defeats the quality purpose; size for residence time, not just storage.
  • Poor conveyance. Bead damaged in transit to the moulder cuts fusion quality downstream.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a silo if I only run one moulder?

For any continuous plant, yes — it decouples pre-expansion from moulding and enforces ageing, which protects block quality.

How long should bead age in the silo?

Typical residence is several hours to a shift; the exact time depends on density and bead grade. The silo should be sized so bead always gets that minimum.

Can one silo handle multiple densities?

Only with separate compartments or sequential dedicated runs; mixing grades ruins moulding consistency.

What feeds the silo?

Your pre-expander fills it; your moulders draw from it — see the full silo system.
